SAR

SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate.  In short it is a measurement of how much radiation is absorbed by an object.  In this case that object is us.  SAR is measured in W(Watts)/Kg(kilogram) and although it has practical uses in a laboratory, its adaptation to the real world is flawed.   It has become a marketing tool to sell phones and pass them off as safe which in turn the majority of the public has bought into.

The ‘safe’ SAR limit established by the FCC is 1.6 W/KG.  Know the FCC doesn’t test this, the manufacturer of the device is responsible for testing and reporting the SAR value.  SAR is woefully inaccurate in terms of relating the safety of any given device.  SAR is a point measurement.  Meaning when the manufacturer of the device measures the SAR value it is calculated in a lab, where everything is controlled.  Measurements are taken around the device and measured at multiple angles and distances and the ONE point that records the highest value becomes the SAR value.  I will say that again the highest point at one time becomes the SAR value.  Nothing else is considered.   There is no cumulative effect taken into account and furthermore this is only when the device is in use (on a call).  It will not take into account for example when the phone is dormant and is looking for the nearest tower to connect to in your pocket or purse, texting, or using apps.

In short the real world applications of the SAR is a fancy number with no real meaning.  If you have based the safety of your device off this number, then you have been taken for ride.   If you would like to limit your exposure as much as possible, but still use a cell phone then make sure it is in airplane mode when not in use.  This will also mean you will have to turn off your location and blue tooth functionality.  If turning these on and off is too inconvenient, then just turn the whole phone off.  Turn it on when you need it or are expecting a call.  Avoid talking with the phone next to your ear.  Keep the phone away from your body when you are using it.  When you talk on the phone use a wired head set or air tube head set.  If you are unable to do this talk on speaker phone.

SAR is a single point in time, nothing more.  People will look at a SAR value and see that it is below a given value and then proceed to use their phone as much or more thinking that it is safe.  Mobile phones are not safe.  The more that you use them, the more risk you assume.  Age matters because it is all about cumulative effects over time.  Because of that younger people are more at risk than older.  In addition, this not only affects the user but everyone around the user.   Just like second hand smoke with cigarettes.  If you are looking for a number to rate a phone, look for one that takes into account the cumulative exposure over time whenever the phone is on (not just on a call), as well as what this will project to anyone around the phone.  As you might have guessed, there is no number for that.  I will leave you to ponder why.

The memory garden

Today marks 14 months.  It is ironic in a way that you mark the passing of a loved one as you would the raising of a baby.  Often in the first few years, everything is measured in weeks and months.  Soon it will be measured in months and years, and finally just years.  Like on the past 3rd’s of every month, we have blueberry muffins.  It doesn’t matter where we are—we always make sure to have blueberry muffins on the 3rd.  Sometimes they are healthy, sometimes they are not, but they have blueberries all the time.   This is one of the many memories that we have of our sweet daughter though it is not the only one.

Memories that last a lifetime are often imbued with emotions.  The association with a time, place, or event is remembered better when you felt something at the time of the memory.  In my experience that can be any emotion, whether good or bad.  Often times when I think about Kyanna the emotion that I feel is loss and pain.  I remember things that I don’t want to, things about the way she was—though she was none of those things.  I remember the horror in her face as her lips turned blue and she struggled to breathe.  I remember forcing myself to watch as she got worse and worse because I couldn’t do anything else but watch and be there.  I remember holding her as she took her last breath.

Spring is a time of renewal.  It is when new life can start.  It is the season to plant something.  I look at my memories and see them as a garden in mid-summer.  Mixed with the things that I wanted to plant, there are weeds everywhere.  The weeds are the memories that I don’t want.  They are the ones that are overcrowding the memories that I am trying to find, the ones that seem to be lost, but they are not.  Unlike a garden where you can pull out the weeds, you can’t weed out memories.  They are always there.  To get rid of the bad is to also get rid of the good, and to do that is to forget.  So instead I can, at times, sift through the weeds and see the flowers that Kyanna planted for me.  These are the memories I want to hold on to.  Memories like her first time at the sea, or the time that she gave me all kinds of kisses for no apparent reason as we walked across the parking garage to go to her treatments in Spain.  I want to remember her constant talking, though sometimes I thought it was a bit much.  I remember her giggles and laughter and the way she could make me laugh, and I remember her cuddles.  Those memories are the flowers I want to see, though often they are lost amongst the weeds.   Hiding under the pain and the loss.

I would like to say that I am good at finding flowers in my garden of memories, but the truth is I am not.  Maybe in time I will be.  For the limited things I know of plants, I do know the ones that you feed will grow more than the ones you don’t.   But no matter how much care you give your flowers there will always be a weed or two that crop up, which I guess is the cost of keeping the flower.  If that is the case then so be it, I think the flowers are worth it.

Here are three easy steps to reduce your EMF exposure.

1) If it communicates using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or connects to anything wirelessly, avoid it. If you have to use it, use it sparingly

2) Install filters to address the dirty electricity in your home or office created by electronics

3) Get rid items that create a lot of electromagnetic pollution like treadmills, CFL’s, dimmer switches, and DECT phones to name a few

Wireless communication is everywhere and saturates us in a sea of EMF’s.  There are many simple things that you can do to reduce your exposure to wireless communication.

  • One is stay away from ‘smart’ tech. Anything that uses a form of wireless commination should be avoided.   Always opt for the wired version.
  • Instead of Wi-Fi use an Ethernet cable. From a health perspective it is safer and it is faster to boot.
  • Opt out of smart meters in your area. These could be located on your gas lines, utility box, and also public water systems.   If you are not able to opt-out, then shield it.
  • Turn off your cell phones when you are not using them. If you are able to get along without them then all the better.  Almost everything you can do on a phone you can do on a computer with a wired connection.
  • Make sure that all your electronic devices (computers, printers, blue ray, game consoles) are not communicating wirelessly
  • Avoid items like your tablets that only use wireless. If you use them only use them in airplane mode.
  • Replacing certain DECT phones, which are the cordless phones that people with a landline use.  There are some that constantly send out a signal even when not in use.  If you want a wireless phone, only buy one that connects when in use or buy a phone with a cord.

You will need to also address the dirty electricity that is running through your home.  To do this you will need filters and also a meter to measure your levels.  The meter, like a scale will just tell you what is there, nothing more, nothing less.  Armed with a simple meter you will be able to clean up your own environment.  The average home takes about 20 filters.   You can purchase filters and a meters here.  I also send instructions on how to use and install the filters.  If there are questions on installation, feel free to contact me at darnell@flutterbusters.com

Lastly cleaning up your home environment by getting rid of big polluters like CFL (curly-q) light bulbs, treadmills and dimmer switches.  Instead of a treadmill, run outside—it is free.  Treadmills have VFD’s (variable frequency drives) which create a lot of dirty electricity.  VFD’s need harmonic filters and most treadmills do not come with them.  If you know how to create filters you could add it to your treadmill but an easier route would be to use something else.  A good substitute would be anything that is mechanical (ie doesn’t use a motor) like an elliptical, exercise bikes, many Nordic Tracks, and rowing machines.  You don’t want anything that can hook up with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Never ever buy a CFL bulb and if you have them, replace them as soon as possible.  Incandescent bulbs or halogen are a suitable replacement.  LED are hit or miss.  Some are good some are not.  Having a Microsurge meter will tell you if the bulb is ok or not.  Simply plug it into a power strip and take note of the reading.  Turn on the light and if the reading is higher than when you started it is bad.  If the number returns to the initial reading then it is alright.   Simple as that.  Lastly replace your dimmer switches with just a standard switch.   Not only are the standard switches cheaper than dimmer switches, they created less power quality issues.

When was the last time that you had a dream?  When you went to sleep last night did you have a good night sleep? I am sure that almost everyone has heard of REM (rapid eye movement) when it comes to sleeping as well as the steps that are associated with it.  Not getting enough sleep, or more importantly, getting enough quality sleep, can lead to a list of ailments.  But the real question is–why are you not sleeping, or sleeping poorly?  One possible answer is your electromagnetic surroundings.

Melatonin is a hormone that is made from serotonin by the pineal gland that is located in the brain.  Melatonin helps regulate sleep patterns through control of your circadian cycle.  It is also associated with your ability to learn, fends off free radicals and other forms of aging, and other key immune-system functions, including your body’s ability to defend against cancer.   Melatonin levels in your body correlate with serotonin levels, which are related to human diet, metabolism, and even depression.  By 2000 there were already 15 different studies demonstrating that extremely low frequency, radio frequency, and microwave radiation suppress your body’s ability to produce melatonin1.  Melatonin is produced at night while you sleep.  Because of the dirty electricity and wireless pollution in or around your room, your body may interpret these signals as from the sun and thus does not function correctly at night because your body thinks that it is day.  Up until the last 150 years, all of the electromagnetic radiation that was experienced on Earth was natural in that it was created by the sun or was naturally present on Earth.  However, with more and more advancements comes more and more forms of electromagnetic pollution.  This can result in poor sleep, which in turn means that you will not recover as fast and could feel more tired.   In the end you don’t go through REM sleep, and thus you don’t dream.  Dreaming is good, dreaming, although they can be disturbing, is healthy and a sign to look for.  If you are not dreaming on a consistent basis, then it could mean something is wrong.  Being tired during the day is not normal.  Needing a 5-hour energy in the middle of the day all the time is not normal nor is taking naps all the time.  This is the way your body is telling you something is wrong.  Will you take the time to listen?

There are really two main sources of EMF’s that can cause the disturbances that can interfere with the production of melatonin. One is the dirty electricity found in the wires of your home which are also called high frequency voltage transients.  The high frequency is created by harmonics which are made by your electronics that you have in your home.  Depending on the area you live and the amount of electronics, this will determine the amount of harmonics that are coming from your wiring in your home.  There are two ways to deal with this.  One is to kill the power to the circuit at night.  Go to your circuit board and shut off the power to the room that you are sleeping in.  You could really turn off all of the items that are not needed, leaving only the essentials like furnace, fridge, or AC on.  The other solution is to install filters to reduce your exposure, both at night and during the day when your power is on.

Another source is wireless or smart tech that you may own or depending on your proximity to neighbors, their tech as well.  This would include but not limited to Wi-Fi (yours or your neighbors), your smart phones, Fitbits or other wireless devices you wear, cell towers or other broadcasting towers in your area, DECT phones, and smart meters.   Two ways to deal with these items is either by shutting of the offending device or with shielding.   If you need shielding, have it measured first before and after to make sure that the shielding material you bought is actually shielding you.   

If you do sleep poorly at night, or feel the need to take something in order to fall asleep, then I would suggest having your sleeping area looked at.  This way at the end of the day, when you lay down to sleep you may get restful sleep filled with dreams.

The insanity of it all

Kids should not get cancer.  There is something that is fundamentally wrong with children getting cancer.  Some kids that get cancer can and do recover for a time and some don’t recover, some die.  For those that don’t make it, days like today are hard.  Today Kyanna would have turned 9.  So the obvious question is then why do they have cancer?  Ask a doctor that if you find yourself in that situation.  Ask them what caused the cancer.  I did.  The answer that I got back was. “we don’t know.”  Have you ever wondered why it is that they can’t tell you how you got cancer, but they can tell you how they are going to treat it?  How is it that you can treat something if you have no idea how it got there in the first place or have any idea of what caused it?  Kyanna’s cancer was caused by environmental factors, I have no doubts about that.  Her exposure to EMF’s was one, and in my opinion, the biggest reason for the creation of Flutter.  Although it may be just my opinion, from Kyanna’s medical records I can show what she had issues with, places that had harmful EMF levels that she was regularly exposed to, as well as the published research that ties it all together.

To summarize Dr. Raymond Hilu in the book Cancer Killers he states that, “unless you address the underlying causes of cancer, it will come back”.  However, in the US that is not the approach most often used.  In the US we are quick to get a prescription for a drug to address a problem with our health.  That drug will never fix the problem, it will simply mask the problem and possibly create other problems that need more fixing, which means more pills.  Case in point if you are impotent you are not that way because you have a deficiency of Cialis or Viagra.  If you are depressed it is not because your Prozac levels are low.  Headaches and migraines are not caused by deficiencies in Tylenol.  Nor do you have pain from low opium levels in your system.  ADHD is not caused by a deficiency of Ritalin, nor is insomnia caused by not taking enough Nyquil.  Your sinuses are not congested because there is not enough Sudafed in your diet.  Not having a steady supply of Clomid is not the reason for your infertility.  Your blood pressure is not based on your metoprolol levels.  This list could go on and on, but know that everything that is in italics is something that the US Navy recognized in 1972 in this document Naval-Medical-Research-Institute-1972-Full-Bibliography as possible effects from microwave and radio wave sickness.  I only listed 8 of the 131 items listed in that document which has over 2300 references.  If there is nothing to fear from microwaves and radio waves, then why need to compile such a list?  This is not the only document of that time that contains this material, you can also read the book Electromagnetic Fields and the Life Environment by Karel Marha which has the same findings.

You might wonder why I refer to something that is more than 40 years old.  The truth is to show that this is not new.  Since it is not new there are no reasons for the powers that be to let this continue, but they do.  There have been numerous research papers since the 70’s up to the present to show the ill effects of EMF’s and it would seem that they all have fallen on deaf ears.  Furthermore, some of that research was done by our own government.  To summarize the ill effects of the of electrical expansion based on data you can read this hypothesis Milham-Historical-Evidence.  In that paper Dr. Milham states that with the electrification of the US you also see a rise in cardiovascular disease, cancer, suicide, and diabetes.  Do any of those sound familiar?   When it comes to high frequency voltage transients, they too can cause cancer as stated in this epidemiology report which you can read Milham-Morgan-2008.  In that you can read that the people in that school exposed to levels >1000 GS from an outlet had a 13% higher chance of getting cancer.  Readings that were >2000GS in a room from an outlet had 26% higher chance of getting cancer.  As much as you would like to think that this was an extreme case, you can find such readings in many, many homes and work places.  Kyanna’s classroom has outlets that are >2000 GS last I checked, as well as many other classrooms in that school building.  If you have ever had a doubt about the safety of cells phones or other wireless communication I would urge you to read Overpowered by Dr. Martin Plank published in 2014.  In that book you can read that individuals living within 400 meters of cell phone transmission tower for more than 10 years had a three times higher rate of cancer than someone that lived over that distance.   As of July 1, 2012 there were more than 480,000 cell phone towers and more than 1.5 million antennae’s just in the US.  (If you would like to see the towers near you search for them at antennasearch.com) In addition to research and books, there have been organizations that have been formed to deal with this growing problem like the BioInitiative, formed by leading scientists from around the world.  They all speak out to alert people of the growing danger.  They look for people to listen, for leaders to at least consider and set safe guidelines.   But how many of us listen, how many act?  I didn’t, not until I was told Kyanna had cancer and I was left wondering why.

I am not saying that just because you are exposed to EMF’s that you are going to get cancer, but I will say that EMF’s have an effect on you.  Much in the same way smoking has an effect on you in that you don’t have to be the one smoking for it to harm you.  The odds of you getting cancer from smoking one or two cigarettes would be about the same, I would guess, from being exposed to one or two EMF’s.  The problem is that we are exposed every day to harmful EMF’s.  Some of us 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  With that type of exposure what do you think the odds of EMF’s having a negative effect on your lives will be?  How much can your body handle?  With smoking and EMF’s the key is exposure and limiting it as much as possible.  Everyone will react to everything differently.  However, in both cases prolonged exposure will increase your risks so limiting or avoiding exposure as much as possible for a better quality of life will always be suggested.

Insanity – the result of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.  This is most widely accredited to Albert Einstein, and as a physicist much smarter than me, I am going to give him credit.  Kids should not get cancer.  However, they are still being diagnosed with cancer–some are winning, some are not.  All the while we continue on changing nothing and wondering why a 7-year-old gets brain cancer.  If you never address the reasons that people or children get cancer, it is going to keep happening.  It is not a question of if, it is a question of when.  To think otherwise is quite honestly the definition of insanity stated above.

Light Bulbs

In this post I will look at compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL, or curly-Q light bulbs), light emitting diodes (LED), incandescent light bulbs, and a halogen light bulb.  Light bulbs like anything else will either use a linear or non-linear load.  In doing so you will be able to see what linear and non-linear means and how this all relates to the dirty electricity in your home.

For each of the bulbs that I have mentioned I tested with the following set up.  The graphs were obtained with a Fluke 190-202 Scopemeter.  To test the light bulbs, I used a standard desk lamp plugged into a surge protector.  Also plugged into that surge protector was a Stetzerizer Microsurge Meter (this will measure the amount of high frequency voltage transients (dirty electricity) in GS units, as well as a Graham Ubiquitous Filter.  Each time that I changed a light bulb (which only took one person) I turned on the light 3 times and so the before and after GS numbers are an average of those three attempts.   The blue line that you see in all of the graphs will be the voltage and the red will be the current.

The first light bulb that I tested was a 60W incandescent light bulb made by Sylvania.  The result is shown in figure 1.

This is what is known as a linear load.  As you can see from the graph the voltage and current are rising and falling at the same rate.  In regards to the creation of dirty electricity, the before and after reading on the microsurge meter were the same at 12.3 GS units.   Unlike some of the bulbs to come all incandescent bulbs will be good bulbs to have in your house.

The next light bulb to look at is a halogen.  Incandescent and halogen are very similar and really a halogen light is a more efficient version of an incandescent.  The halogen light bulb that I used for figure 2 was a Westinghouse 40W Eco-halogen.

As you can see this is also a linear load.   As you would except then the microsurge reading was the same before and after I turned on the light at 12.3 GS units.

Now enter the non-linear loads.  The first light bulb to look at is the CFL.  The CFL in this case used in Figure 3 was an 18W Westinghouse.

Non-linear is when the voltage and current use are not proportional as they are in this case.  You can see this because there are many places where the current (red line) is flat.  This is also how you create something that is energy efficient, in most cases.  The downside is often you add dirty electricity to your environment.  In this case the before GS reading was 12.6 however when you turned on the light the average GS reading was 56.  This was just one light bulb, now think of what a home filled with these will do to your readings.  In addition, CFL light bulbs will also emit a radio frequency (RF) which also adds to the EMF pollution in your home.  This bulb and really all CFL bulbs are something to stay away from.

Another CFL light bulb tested was the 30W Full Spectrum Bulb.  This bulb also emits an RF as well as creates dirty electricity.  The graph in Figure 4 shows how it uses current.

The average GS reading before was 12 and when this light was turned on, the average GS reading was 87.6.  Once again, keep in mind this was just one light bulb and you don’t want to be above 50 GS units anywhere in your house.

The next type of bulbs to look at are the dimmable and non-dimmable LED light bulbs.  The light bulb in figure 5 is an 8.5W Sylvania non-dimmable LED.

As you can tell from the graph this is also a non-linear load.  The average beginning GS value was 11.3 and when the light was turned on the average GS reading was 19.  This also creates dirty electricity, however it is better than the CFL in that is doesn’t create an RF signal and produces less dirty    electricity.**

The next bulb is also by Sylvania and is a 9W Ultra LED dimmable.  This is also a non-linear load and its graph is shown in figure 6.

I did not test the dimmable qualities of this bulb because I don’t have any dimmers in the house, nor use any because they create power quality issues in your home.  The before and after GS reading in this case were the same at 13.6.  In this case, and this case only, this would be an acceptable bulb to have.

In summary, incandescent and halogen light bulbs will always be your best option if you are trying to avoid creating dirty electricity in your home.  I would never recommend any type of CFL lighting system.  LED can or can’t be good when it comes to dirty electricity.  Know that not all LED’s are the same and can vary from brand to brand.  The best way to determine if a light bulb creates dirty electricity is do what I did here and plug a lamp (with the bulb you are testing) into a surge protector along with a Stetzerizer Microsurge Meter.  The microsurge will initially go up, because of the arc created when making a connection.  However, if the readings stay higher than what you started at, don’t use that light bulb because it is bad.  If it goes back to your initial reading, then you have something usable.  This is something that you are going to have to test with every LED light bulb, because they are not all made the same.  You would not need to test every incandescent or halogen though because these are considered linear loads.

 

**It should also be noted that as you continued to turn on and off the 8.5W LED the GS reading did not change after a while after having the light on.  The before and after reading were the same.  The averages listed above are what could be considered a cold reading.  Meaning the light bulb and lamp sat off for a couple minutes and then were turned on.   Once I discovered this I repeated it for each bulb and this was the only one that had different readings.

New Years

There are have been many questions asked over the last year that are simple and innocent in nature, but they are so very hard for us to answer.  The most common is how many kids do you have?  I always answer 2.  When they ask how old I give Ayden’s age and say the other is in heaven, she was 7 almost 8.  Just because she is in heaven doesn’t mean she was never here or that I love her any less than I love my son.  I love them both equally but in different ways because there are many forms of love.  I love my daughter by remembering, wearing her necklace and ashes, by trying to make a difference with something she had problems with, and by making sure she is present in all that I do.  She is still a part of me.  I hang on to all of her items, her pictures, the home movies, and all the memories I have of her.  My love for my daughter is shown by hanging on no matter what.

I love my son as much but differently.  I know what is in the world, the dangers of it, and all the harm that can enter your life at a moment’s notice.  My love for him is shown in the way I don’t hang on, but let go.  I let him into the world.  I try and teach him all of the things that you can’t find in a book or school.  These are the things that matter.  Most of these are simple things like manners and being respectful.   Some are harder like that you should do what you think is right, because it is right regardless of the costs.   The hardest is what money can and can’t buy, because as you get older this one is what people forget the most.  I don’t try and hide him to protect him, I try and arm him as best I can and prepare him so that he can be part of this world, because I love him.   I shield him as much as I can until he is old enough to stand on his own, and then hope that life is kind to him.

Today is our New Years, there are no parties or joyous celebrations.  There is just remembering, eating blueberry muffins, and eating sherbet.  When I gave my daughter’s eulogy I talked of the disproportionate balance that I felt and a need to compensate for it in some way.   This website and what it stands for is a testament to that.  However, it is just merely a start.  As we work towards a balance, that for us will never happen, I hope that the information you have found and will find makes a difference in your lives.  It has made a difference in ours.  Happy New Years.

The picture above is a waveform that was taken from the sink to the floor in a house in Eau Claire, WI.  What this can tell you is the amount of ground current present in a home.   Whether we are referring to this as ground current, stray voltage, or contact current, know that we are talking about the same thing.   Stray voltage is voltage that is not contained in a wire.  It runs unchecked through the ground.  In a perfect world, there would be no stray voltage and it all would be contained in the wires.  In the most extreme cases ground would be used as a last resort.  Our ground really would be ground with zero potential.  This is not the case because of the increased use of non-linear loads by consumers.

The easiest way to explain this is to relate it to something that is more understandable for most people.   In this case it would be driving to and from work every day.    You will leave your home and go to work and then come back home.  Under normal circumstances, traveling along the roads we have will be the fastest way to get to and from work.   However, if there is a traffic jam, then you will more than likely need to take a different route home.  If you had off-road capabilities with your vehicle, then cutting across the fields or off-roading might be the fastest route back home.  In the end, you are going to end up where you started, which is home.  As long as you end up at home it doesn’t matter if you travelled on the roads provided, or made your own roads.

Electricity works in the same way that you go to work.  It will go out and come back to where it originally came from (Kirchhoff’s Laws). As long as traveling on the wires is the easiest path, electricity will continue to travel the wires.  If this is not the easiest path, electricity will find other paths that are easier to make it back “home”.    With the use of more and more non-linear loads, our wires have more things riding on them (examples would be harmonics, transients, and other communications).  All of these added things to the power supply make it harder and harder for it to move through wire, especially when the wire is too small.  There is a “traffic jam”.

Also, if the wire is too small to allow the electricity to pass through, it can create heat.  Enough heat will cause the wire to burn out.  In order to stop burn outs, the neutral wires are connected to the ground wires so instead of traveling along the neutral wire, the electricity will flow into the ground and back “home”, essentially “off-roading” through the easiest pathway, the ground. The end result is what we have now, contact current in our homes.

Ground current/stray voltage/ contact current can cause a list of problems for animals and people.  During a home inspection we look at the amount of contact current that you have in a house.  If your contact current is above 18 µA biological effects relevant to cancer start to take place.  That level has been accepted by the NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences).  You can read more research on this here.  It is important to have this tested to make sure that you are under this limit.   Know that based on the demands for power in your area, your contact current will also vary; meaning the more demand there is, the more current that you will have traveling through your home and vice versa.  If you are worried about this in your home, you can look at the following things in your house.

One is to look at your plumbing, which is a very common way for ground current to travel into your home.  Recall electricity will take the path of least resistance and copper is a great conductor, that is why they use it for electric wire.  You can easily test to see if there is current traveling along your pipes by checking to see if the metal pipe is giving off a magnetic field.  Anything that has current traveling through it will create a magnetic field.  That is a property of physics.  A relatively inexpensive item to test this with is a TriField Meter Model 100XE which is easy enough to find.  If you have current traveling in your pipes, you will be able to measure a magnetic field there.  If you do have a magnetic field, look at replacing 2-3 ft of the copper piping with plastic piping by the main in-take, (this is only for homes that have all copper piping for water).   This would go for the sewer lines as well.  If you are going to be remodeling or building in the future, look at using materials that are very low conductors, especially in your foam underlayment for flooring.  Both of these things are simple things.  However, doing all the simple things over time can add up to make a big difference.

Measuring what you can’t see

Harmonics have been around since the first AC generator was used to create electricity.  They are something that anyone with an electrical background has heard of.  A harmonic is an integer multiple of the fundamental frequency. Harmonics are created when the voltage and current are not used proportionately.  Because of the disproportionate use, harmonics are created and added to the 60 Hz wave.  Devices that do this are said to use a nonlinear load. The 60 Hz is the fundamental frequency that will be discussed today and so the harmonics created from this frequency would be as follows:  the 1st harmonic is 60, the 2nd is 120, the 3rd is 180, and so on.

Most of the electronics in your home use nonlinear loads, as well as most all items marketed as energy efficient.   Harmonics are a cost of having something that is energy efficient.  The following is what happens when you have multiple items of these in your home.  Below in Figure 1 is the waveform that is in my house when I remove all of the filters.

The red wave is the 60 Hz cycle. If I had no harmonics present or rather a clean 60 Hz cycle in my house the blue line would be flat.  The higher density of blue represents higher frequency harmonics that are present on the wires in my house.  Below in Figure 2 is a spectrum analysis of the harmonics of the blue wave in Figure 1.  In short it tells you what harmonics are present and how much.

The red X is on the frequency of 1740 Hz for a reason.  1740 Hz is the 29th harmonic of the 60 Hz cycle.  This is significant because all of the blue that you see to the right of the red X are frequencies that are going to penetrate the skin and will dissipate internally to the human body.  This happens at the 1.7 KHz mark on the graph above.

After installing the 20 filters in my home, the waveform in my home is shown in Figure 3.

If you compare Figure 1 to Figure 3 you will see that the blue areas are much less concentrated.  The Stetzerizer Filters have filtered out many of the harmonics as well as some of the voltage transients that were present on the wires in my home.   In figure 4 you will see the spectrum analysis of the blue line from Figure 3.

In Figure 4 the red X is also placed on the 29th harmonic (1740 Hz).  Everything to the right of the cursor is what is being absorbed internally.  If you compare the Figure 2 and Figure 4 you will see a large number of the harmonics that have been filtered out.  Stetzerizer Filters are designed to filter out the frequencies from 4 KHz to 100 KHz because these are the most biologically active frequencies.   Both Figure 2 and Figure 4 are shown with the same scaling applied.

All of this information that is shown above is included in your report when you have your home tested.  You will be able to see the beginning and the afterward.  Every house is unique so everyone’s results will look a bit different.  The only constant theme is that you will see a reduction in the harmonics in your home.
